It is no more news that centralization means censorship and privacy is a mirage, especially on social media. People will only opt-in to a level of intrusion acceptable to them by the social media they choose. Apart from the fact that social media owners benefit from sharing private data, they face fires from governments when their platform is uncensored. To many extents, it is not their fault, they have to comply or get off business. Crypto social media came in to solve these issues- to make sure users are uncensored and can keep their private data (especially their funds) private. But it also faced so many challenges because it is not yet decentralized enough. Even when users are not censored by governments, users sensor other users.
Why Hive Blockchain Forked out of Steem Blockchain
Do not get me wrong, decentralization is the key to eradicating privacy problems and censorship that people crave for. Hive forked from Steem blockchain because some community members feel the decisions for the whole community should not be swayed or made by a single person who owns a super large stake among many other challenges the community has faced. This is reasonable and a very great idea because the largest stake owner can decide to do anything they like up to the point of censoring other users via upvotes and downvotes.
Recent occurrences between CryptoFinally and a/some member(s) of the community revealed that even when you have a stake large enough you can decide to take out your anger on many innocent community members because you want to get back at those who hurt you. This is by anonymously creating multiple accounts with stakes to downvote your opponent and those who support them. This in no way supports or opposes the actions of any party but it is just the truth. There is no way of knowing the true intentions of a malicious person on a blockchain or even in a centralized media until the action is taken.
Hive Blockchain’s Mitigation to ‘Users-Censoring-Users’ Syndrome
Hive presents a “mute list” option to prevent any malicious person from seeing your posts or comment. This is an innovative update from experiences on Steemit. This essentially creates a level of privacy from spammers and malicious users seeking to take revenge on innocent users. The mute list essentially creates a ‘blacklist’ from people who have been known for spamming or posting phishing links. A user can decide to follow a ‘global mute list’ from people who have created one and followed by many or create a personal list. Users like Blocktrades seek to go further to create a ‘Trust computation’ system to further exterminate censorship and improve privacy.
Total Decentralization is the Answer
For many crypto social media, the underlying blockchain is decentralized but the front end is still hosted by companies that are centralized. Apparently, at the point of coercion by the government to the hosting company, they may decide to remove support for these decentralized communities.
A Decentralized Future
I believe it is time to begin to research decentralized hosting options and promote capable browsers that can access them. Unstoppable Domain started the introduction of Hosting a web on InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) which is decentralized and the Opera browser gave support for its application to be able to access such websites. With the all-new Decentralized chat feature as introduced by Unstoppable Domains, it seems they want to lead the world to a decentralized future.
Metahash blockchain in its own capacity is research into becoming the first blockchain to present the first decentralized internet with a decentralized domain name, decentralized hosting, and a decentralized browser.
